Early on June 8, Ben Crane was in his hotel room in Memphis, restless as he faced 30 holes of golf on the final day of the PGA Tour’s St. Jude Classic.

Crane had a four-shot lead going into Sunday, but the tournament’s stops and starts because of weather — at one point, he went 28 hours between hitting shots — kept him from establishing any kind of routine, and his always-active mind just would not let him sleep for long.
